So remember how excited I was when fanfiction.net went mobile friendly?

Well there's a way to read Twilighted.net fanfic off line easily now. My fanfic buddy FanficZombie tweeted me the other day with a little tidbit. Check out her blog for more info.

reading this offline has been the Holy Grail!

Her big news - remember the fanfic downloader app I talked about before that you can use to download stories from fanfiction.net to read offline later? Well it works on Twilighted.net as well.

Phew! I have almost finished converting the free mofuse blogs over to Mofuse Premium blogs.
Updated mobile links on sidebar.
New Twi-Mobile site at http://twimobile.prohost.mobi/ also updated.
About half the sites have also added a new feature where mobile devices are automatically redirected to the mobile site. Fancy huh?
IPad users please let me know if you are being redirected and if it's driving you crazy as the mobile blogs aren't iPad optimized.

Lastly, the sidebar lower half of members are those whose mobile sites aren't in proper order right now. I would never take you off since you have allowed me to badger you enough to be here. It's just a reminder to get stuff fixed and indeed email me for assistance at twicupcake(at)gmail.com

Free Mofuse for Blogs Have Changed

Sigh, I leave the blogging world for two weeks and look what happens? Free Mofuse for Blogs is no longer available. Instead they are offering a very low price (only 3 bucks a month) for their MofusePremium Jumpstart plan. You just enter promo code three.

Considering that the MofusePremium is more flexible, extremely easy to use, offers autodetection of mobile devices, and has lots of other features we should be happy they're offering it for only 3 bucks a month. There are still limitations to this beginner plan, mainly that there is a low maximum number of elements (links, pages, etc) per blog.

This last part is what doesn't work for me. If you've used my latest Twi-Mobile site at http://twi-mobile.prohost.mobi/ you would have noticed that all the network member links don't fit on one page and I've had to list people over a few pages. Just not as elegant.

What's my free alternative? The free alternative to this is to use mobify. It is indeed free and makes beautiful sites. I can put unlimited links on it and really customize everything and not just show an RSS feed. Downside? You need to know basic CSS in order to pretty it up. Not an issue for those of you web designers out there but for the rest of us there's a bit of a learning curve. You can hire a web designer of course to help with this but once again incurring more costs.

Those of you who read fanfic and have been following my blog know that I've made it my mission in life to do everything from my iPhone. I've even gone to great lengths to try and get fanfiction.net stories onto my iPhone and iPod touch and written tutorials for you guys as well.

Sunday was the release of the final chapter of Master of the Universe by Snowdragon Icequeens. It's Chapter 87 and this fic has finally finished after 8 months of wonderful reading bliss.

I was so happy when my email alert from fanfiction.net came with this at the end

If you click on the mobile version this is how the story looks from my iPhone.

To jump chapters you can scroll to the bottom or press Menu at the top.

This even lets you Review, Add Story or Author as Favourite, and Follow Story or Author.

What happens if you go to a regular desktop fanfiction.net URL? Nothing, as in there is no automatic detection and redirection for mobile devices.

But it's easy to get to the mobile version of any fanfiction.net story.

Just replace the www with an m

becomes

Side tutorial - How do you do select and replace text on an iPhone?

First hold your finger down on the www part of the URL until you get the magnifying glass.

Then tap on Select, not Select All.

You should get a Cut/Copy/Paste box showing a highlighted www part. Don't click on any of those options.

Now just type m to replace the www and you'll get the correct URL. Then press Go at the bottom right and you're there.

So if you don't mind reading fanfiction.net online this is the quickest way. If you have to read it offline then still follow the tutorial here.

I am super duper excited that Random Acts of Rob (RAOR) has decided to join Twi-Mobile. I've been following them since the first week I became a twilight fan a year ago and was introduced to fanfiction. They have the TwiPorn Library and it's seriously full of lemony goodness that you could get lost in forever. They are a mobile friendly Wordpress site but keep in mind stories they link to may not necessarily be mobile friendly on Fanfiction.net or Twilighted.net but the summaries on RAOR are mobile so you can see what you get before you move on and click. New iPad Wallpapers for Twifans

So, two lucky people I know so far have an iPad for Mother's Day. Aw, how sweet! To make their new iPads extra Twilight pretty I sent them some presents.

Keep in mind that I made these very simple so they are usable behind the icon screens and not just the unlock screen.

Mofuse Blogs Back Online

So being the type A person I made a Mofuse Premium blog where you can all redirect your mobile links just in case the free ones you all have go down.

Mofuse Server Maintenance

Hi everyone,

Well, I woke up to all the mofuse blogs being offline today. And, it's not just our Twi-Mobile blogs. Everyones free mofuse blogs aren't running today.

I blame myself since I spent hours yesterdays tweeting and emailing with David, the CEO of Mofuse. He was helping me figure out a bug I found on Mofuse for free. In the end to help me solve the issue he gave me a whole whack of mofuse premium blogs eg. no ads and all in all prettier blogs.

But I am assuming today that they are busy fixing the bugs that I mentioned to him. My bad.

So apologies to all who were hoping to stay in bed surfing their mobile Twilight blogs all day and ended up getting "file cannot be found" messages.

The Mofuse service is free and under no obligation to give us any warning when this happens.

If you want to transfer your mobile site to a premium site where this is much less likely to happen let me know. Granted I will have to be your admin for it since I'm the one with the free accounts (thanks to David) so you'd have to be okay with that. Otherwise it's about 7 bucks a month.

Or you can switch from blogger to Wordpress and then you'd have your own built in mobile version. MissAmyJoon, DreamySim1, and Thinking of Rob all are WP blogs and hence unaffected by today's outtage.

It's great that Eclipse has an official app but it's not free. Read on to see if it's worth the 99 cents.

By the way, to get the app you can't go to the Official Eclipse Movie mobile page from your iPhone. It's in Flash and iPhone doesn't support Flash. Funny huh? So you'll have to go to your App store and search for Twilight tracker instead.

You could download it on your desktop Mac or PC through the Official Eclipse Movie page to your iTunes and then sync it with your iPhone.

Twilight Blog iPhone App Icons - Collect Them All!

So every Twi-Mobile network blog has an icon you can add to your iPhone/iPod touch.

These are the ones we've got so far:

(I'm missing Thinking of Rob and Trixie & Tess because their iPhone icons aren't working and just shows a screencap - let me know when it's fixed ladies. For mofuse blogs remember it's in the iPhone settings and you need to add the URL of the image (must right click on the image wherever you have hosted it). So even though you technically only need to bookmark Twi-Mobile at http://twimobile.mofuse.mobi/ to get one stop access to all these mobile blogs, if you want to have a couple pages of app icons dedicated to your Twilight blogs go ahead and put them on your iPhone or iPad.

To add an icon to your screen of a twilight blog just go to the mobile version of that blog and then click the + sign at the bottom of your iPhone and you should see this page

Select Add to Home Screen and you are done.

A Web App Makes Mobile Fanfic Even Easier

So I have detailed post on How to Read Fanfic On Your Mobile about how to use the Fanfiction Downloader program on your PC or Mac to create a mobi file which can then be read on multiple ebook readers including the Stanza for iPhone.

Well, there is a faster way around all of this which I have been neglecting to tell you about.

You know how it's annoying that with the old way you had to make them on your desktop and then transfer the files to your phone? This new way can make them online and then your iPhone can go and get them from the web.

~~The same guy who wrote the~~ ~~Fanfiction Downloader~~ ~~software also~~ Thank God Roman Kirillov created a web program where you can use Fanfiction Downloader online and it will store your converted story files online for you automatically IF you give them your Gmail account info.

That is the kicker.

My husband (Mr. TC as you know him from my regular blog Twilight, Travel, and Treats) is an ex-hacker turned good so to speak. He is super paranoid about network security and spends his whole work life trying to prevent people from getting hacked. The idea of me giving my Gmail account info to anybody is appalling. Thus until now I had ignored the whole web app and just continued doing it offline on my laptop.

However, I was convinced to give it a go after Alison, owner of Twifans, told me that this is her go-to method for fanfiction on her iPhone. It just felt wrong to not share and give you the option.

(Btw, Twifans is revamping their mobile site to make it even better so they are technically not as mobile friendly as before but I am leaving them up just because it makes me happy they are on the list.)

You can read more about the Fanfiction Downloader Web App and how it works from the creators post here. So, if you are okay with giving your Gmail account info to the Fanfiction Downloader Web App, go ahead and try it. I went ahead and did it and it was exceedingly easy and they store your fanfic for you. They say that your password is not given out by Gmail to anyone else but I don't know enough about it to tell you if that is trustable

If you have an iPhone you can get the stories sent straight to Stanza on the iPhone; no more having to put them on Stanza desktop and transfer them.

The Web App makes epub files which are quite universal but can't be read by certain ebook readers, like the Kindle without being converted. The desktop version gives you mobi files which are Kindle friendly. Both versions output text and html files.

If it's important for you to have a working Table of Contents where you can click on the chapters:

for iPhone - both the Web App or desktop Fanfiction Downloader will work. Stanza on iPhone seems to be able to read chapter markings on prc, mobi, and epub files.

for Desktop - I tried Kindle, Barnes & Noble ereader, Calibre, and Stanza desktop. None of them could give a workable Table of Contents. The table of contents could be seen on Stanza desktop but wasn't usable. The only winner? Mobipocket Reader was able to read prc and mobi files with clickable chapters. Note that it often crashed too. Sigh, nothing perfect so far.

Twifans Joins Twi-Mobile!

So Twifans, the biggest Twilight fan site, agreed last night to join the Twi-Mobile network. Last check they had 32,000 members! If you go to their regular site http://www.twifans.com/ your phone should be automatically detected and redirected to their mobile site. Of course there is a link back to the desktop site too.

Also, Alison at Twifans uses the fanfiction downloader app (made by the same guy as the fanfiction downloader software that I mention in my sidebar post) to read fanfic on her iPhone. It is amazing and I'll post about it shortly.

iPad for the Twilight Fan - Coolest fanfic reader and more

So as an owner of an iPod touch and an iPhone I am excited that Apple has released the iPad. The biggest reason I don't have one is that they aren't available in Canada yet. I was also holding out for one which had 3G instead of just wi-fi capability - good news is that this is being rolled out April 30th (tee hee, can you tell I drafted this post last week?).

Just like the iPhone you can use it vertically or horizontally see?

These are some accessories you can get to make it more useful - the keyboard with dock is great and I like the stand that makes it into a big digital photo frame.

And probably the most useful feature of all for me as a lover of lemony fanfic? You can read your fanfic on it offline in Stanza, just like on the iPhone and iPod touch.

iPad makes a great eReader for bringing your fanfic with you

Above is the Kindle bookshelf for those of you who prefer to buy your regular ebooks. For those who just want to read Twilight fanfic on their mobile then you can convert the stories to a file that you can upload to your bookshelf. Just see my post here on how to do that.

Note - Stanza for iPhone apparently looks pretty bad on iPad. Most people suggest using iBook and uploading epub fanfic files into itunes. You can generate the epub files with the Fanfic Downloader web app.

Twilight wallpapers to pretty up your iPad.

So when I do get my iPad I expect to be able to pretty it up just like my iPhone and iPod touch. I went looking for iPad Twilight wallpapers and came up with only less than 20 of them. The places I found them were http://www.coolipadwallpaper.com/ and Digital Citizen.

What is so special about iPad wallpapers and why can't you just use some random desktop one?

I found this great post at Digital Citizen explaining why you'll have a problem using just regular desktop wallpapers.
Essentially, the iPad has a screen that is 1024 X 768 pixels. You can use it horizontally or vertically. Regular desktop wallpapers are meant for a horizontal screen. In some tablets PCs that can rotate, like the HP one that my husband uses, when you switch to a vertical position the wallpaper gets squished to tall and skinny eg. very distorted. The great thing is the iPad doesn't squish your wallpaper BUT it will crop it to be tall and skinny. So no distortion but you better hope that your wallpaper didn't have something important (like Rob's head) in the sides that are going to be cropped off.

It just looks a bit messy.

So what to do? If you don't care just go ahead and stick any old horizontal wallpaper in there. It will probably work and if you don't use it vertically often then it's fine. If you are type A like me and want your screen to look perfectly pretty Twilight style horizontally and vertically then you need an iPad specific wallpaper. The correct proportions are a square 1024 X 1024 pixels. That way regardless of which way you are holding your iPad nobody's head gets cut off.

Much better. Neat and clean.

So, following the guidelines of the post from Digital Citizen and testing it in this awesome iPad screen emulator I made a few wallpapers of my own. These are not the super gorgeous ones I know that my talented photo girls in the Twilight blogosphere can do but they'll do for now.

Almost all the original images that I used to make these wallpapers came from Lion & Lamb Love. They have an absolutely huge collection of high quality of Twilight related images.

So I found out 17Forever Lisa has a Blackberry Curve and MissAmyJoon has a Samsung Propel phone. In honour of Lisa and other non-iPhone users I dug up some Twilight wallpapers for you. I chose all Robsten ones today also in honour of Lisa :)

You can choose your model of phone (almost guaranteed they'll have it listed unless it's super old) and there are hundreds of wallpapers for each model. Mind you they aren't all as gorgeous as the ones that MissAmyJoon and DreamySim1 make but they'll do while those girls are working on more creations. iPhone Wallpapers from DreamySim1

Many of you already know DreamySim1's work from Thinking of Rob and Random Acts of Rob. She makes gorgeous Rob wallpapers for the desktop and also the iPhone. Seriously once you get onto her site you could get stuck there for a long time just dreaming your day away looking at Rob.

Remember to put them as wallpaper after you've gotten to just the image on your screen, just tap and hold for a second and the Save Image option should come on. How do you get these onto your ipod touch/iphone? From your iPhone or iPod touch just tap and hold the image until you get a popup giving you "Save Image" option. Once you've saved it go to your Photos and it should be in your Camera Roll album. Click on the image and save it as Wallpaper - you are done!

What is a mobile blog?

If you try and read the regular version of a blog from your cell phone/Blackberry or mobile device like an ipod touch or possibly Kindle you'll notice that it's harder to navigate properly.

Regular version - hard to read

It may take forever to load and then you end up wiggling all over the screen. Or if you are using a text-only mode there is a whole bunch of extra crap when all you want to see is the latest post.

Enter the Mobile Blog - you take the regular desktop blog and just get the posts and make them into a compact easy to read version for your mobile phone or device.

For bloggers

I have a blogger/website but I don't have a mobile. Does this still apply to me?

Yes, as a blogger it's in your interest to keep your followers happy right? Well, about 20% of your readers access your blog from either their cell phone or some other mobile device. This will make it easier for them to follow you while they're away from their desktops. Your posts are updated instantly as the mobile blog just gets content from your blog's RSS/Atom feed.

How do I set up a mobile version of my blog/website? What are the options? What does it cost?

For blogger blogs
Sadly there is no built in mobile site and no widget to easily add things either. Options are:

Easy, pretty, low cost $3/month - Mofuse was a company that offered free mobile sites to blogs as well as pay professional mobile sites. They shut down their free division in June. But they have discounted their starter package to just $3/month (price of one Starbucks coffee). Go to mofusepremium.com and if you sign up with discount code three it should give you that rate. The Mofuse mobile site builder is easy to use and also gives you the ability to automatically redirect mobile traffic to the mobile site. You can also monetize/advertise as well. This is what most of the Twi-Mobile members are using like myself.

Free, very pretty, flexible content, need to know CSS/HTML - If you absolutely want to do this the free route then try your hand at mobify.me. It is a mobile site builder that is very flexible and gives you a lot of content control. The catch? To make it really pretty you need to have a basic handle on CSS/HTML. It is really meant for web designers.

Free, basic generic, easy to use - Google Reader
Now this ain't too pretty but it gets the job done.
All you do is add your post RSS feed URL into the text below. Then make a text link under your header or on your sidebar saying 'Mobile Version'

I think most of you should know by now that you have a mobile version of your site already. When readers are on mobiles visiting your site they automatically get redirected to it.

How to Read Fanfic On Your Mobile

Reading Fanfiction.net ONLINE

For those of you who don't mind reading fanfiction.net online from your mobile they've finally made it easier. Go the story that you want to read and then change the www in the URL to an m. It's that simple. See my post here for more info.
For those who still want offline versions on their mobiles read on.

- note Twilighted.net does not have an easy online mobile site

Reading Twilighted.net and Fanfiction.net OFFLINE

Easiest - no desktop computer required, must have a Gmail account and give them your password

If you want to convert fanfiction.net or twilighted.net stories into files you can download onto your mobile and do not mind giving your Gmail account info to the fanfic downloader site then go ahead and see my new post.

More effort - no Gmail account required
- only works with Fanfiction.net

What it doesn't do? Automatically update your fanfic for you into your mobile ereader. I don't think that's been invented yet (please tell me if it has). For now, you'll have to manually update each time.

Note that when you use this method it is great for complete books and if you are willing to download each update yourself onto your iphone then it is totally worth it for the partials too.

Of note, I use Windows XP but all this would work with Vista. I have an iphone, ipod touch, or iPad and this method works on both devices. If you have a Blackberry or Palm then stay with me until you get to the Stanza part and you should use Mobipocket ereader instead.

Last thing, I am assuming you are using a wireless network and that your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad (set on Wifi) is on the same wireless network as your PC.

If you are not using a wireless network then see the Stanza FAQ here. You may need to save as a different file type as well in fanfic downloader so take a look at the FAQ first before embarking further.

Things you need to do:

part 1

This first step takes the whole fanfic story you like from www.fanfiction.net and converts it into an electronic book (in this case a Mobipocket ebook) using fanfic downloader.

1) On your desktop Download and install fanfic downloader from this site Raimonds Homepage.

2) Once you have installed it, open up the application Fanfiction Downloader.

3) Before you do anything else go to the Settings at the top and pull down to Settings. I will uncheck the box that says "###" separator at beginning of each chapter. Leave this alone if you want the whole book to be one big file without individual chapters. Press Save.

4) Go to www.fanfiction.net and get the URL for the story you want to convert. I chose Master of the Universe by Snowqueens Icedragon because it's my favourite. It has now been removed from fanfiction.net so I'm glad I got it when I could (I still have the files if you want them email me).

5) In "Step 1: Source URL and ID" copy and paste the URL of the fanfic you want into the field "Story URL." Then, click continue.

6) In "Step 2: Check download" you can change which chapters you want to download. If you want the whole book then don't change any of the numbers. Next to the "Name" there is a field where you can change what Title this book will have on your computer. I also just leave the default here.

7) Click "Save As" and change which folder you would like this file saved in. Don't worry about the "Save as Type" field and leave it as whatever it shows up as. Then, click continue.

8) In "Step 3: Configuration" choose between having chapters or having one long book. I usually like to have the book broken up into chapters.

9) Next box choose "Save as Mobipocket ebook."

Your screen should now look like this

10) Press Download and wait until you see a black screen zooming by with lots of text. When that finishes then you are done.

Your story is now a mobi file stored in whatever folder you put for "Save As."

part 2

If you have a Blackberry or Palm just go to Mobipocket eReader and follow their instructions.

If you have an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad then I'll walk you through.

You need to find a way to open this mobi file and then you can read it on your PC. You use Stanza desktop to achieve that. When you have opened a book on Stanza desktop then you can share it with any ipod touch or iphone that is sharing the same wireless network.

1) Download Stanza desktop for your Microsoft Windows PC here and install.

2) Open Stanza desktop and go to File, pull down the menu to Open File. Go to the folder where you have stored the mobi file and select the file itself. Remember choose the file that has the .mobi extension.

3) It should take less than 20 seconds to load and you should be able to see the story now in Stanza Desktop. You can minimize Stanza desktop now but don't close it.

4) Now you need to transfer it to your ipod touch or iphone. You do this through the wireless network.

5) On your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad download the free Stanza app.

6) Now on your PC on Stanza Desktop go to the Tools on the pull down menu and go to Enable Sharing. Make sure that there is now a checkmark next to Enable Sharing. This allows Stanza on your iphone or ipod to get any story that is open on your Stanza desktop.

Now Stanza says there are many ways of sharing your books with your mobile - ways listed here.

7) This is the step that gave me the most trouble - sharing your books from the desktop to the ipod/iphone. For this part at first I needed to turn off the firewall on my PC for a very short time. I can't let my husband find out since he is a network security specialist by trade. Please don't email me that we shouldn't turn off our firewalls - I know already...

If you have trouble here see this Troubleshooting FAQ from Stanza.

They will suggest that if you have a firewall enabled (you can find it in the Control Panel under Windows security) make sure that it allows traffic over TCP port 9652. You do this by going to Exceptions and then "Add Port" and typing in name "Stanza" and Port "9562" and tick off the TCP box. They will also ask you to check that the program Bonjour is also ticked off (see Stanza support).

The thing that I finally fixed to get it to work with the firewall enabled was that I made it so JAVA(TM) PLATFORM SE BINARY was allowed to access the internet (it asked if I wanted to keep it blocked and I said no). I actually couldn't find a way to get that step but the computer prompted me.

If you get frustrated remember that in the end I ended up turning OFF my firewall for a few minutes. Just remember to turn it back on after you transfer your fanfic to your ipod/iphone.

8) On your ipod/iphone click on your Stanza app. You should see this screen.

9) Still on the iphone click on the bottom middle "Get Books"

Click bottom left - Get Books

and then go to Shared at the top.

Click Share at the Top and you should see your
computer listed below.

You should see your computer listed there under "Computers Sharing Books" so click on your PC name.

Surprised my netbook is named Isabella? How many of yours are too?

10) It should say "Loading" and eventually your story should show up.

11) Click on the green arrow to the right of the title and it will download the file into the Stanza app and put it in your library. When it is downloaded the green arrow changes to a grey circle.

12) Once the gray circle appears, click on the story and voila!

You should be able to flip pages and also be able to touch the screen once to get here

Bottom left Book Icon leads you
to Table of Contents

and then if you click on the lower left Book Icon it should take you to this Table of Contents.

what to do about updates?

Every time there is an update you have two choices

1) This way keeps the whole thing together all the time but still with chapter markings. Before you add an update, delete the book off your ipod Stanza. Then go through all my instructions from the top again starting with copying and pasting the URL into fanfic downloader. You will have the whole book every time all as one file.

2) The second way keeps the already existing partial and new updates will appear each as a separate book from the original eg. not adding to the original partial book file. Do the exact same thing as above but in the fanfic downloader step 2 input only Chapter Number "X" for the updated chapter and also change your Save As file to a different filename otherwise you will get confused eg. Master of the Universe 2. Finish the process as above to get it on your ipod.

You can choose your model of phone (almost guaranteed they'll have it listed unless it's super old) and there are hundreds of wallpapers for each model. Mind you they aren't all as gorgeous as the ones that MissAmyJoon and DreamySim1 make but they'll do while those girls are working on more creations. For the Blackberry Curve alone I found over 200 Twilight backgrounds.

iPad Wallpaper Archive

How do you get these onto your iPad as a wallpaper?

From your iPad click on the wallpaper image that you want. Then you should see a download button like this.

Click the download button. You should get to a screen that just shows the image in the corner.

Just tap and hold the image until you get a popup giving you "Save Image" option like this. Sometimes this takes a couple tries but you should be able to get it.

Click on the Save Image button and it should be saved in your iPad Photos on your Homescreen.

Choose wisely for your Unlock Screen versus Homescreen Wallpapers to avoid this:
